Description
From El Calafate, in just minutes, we ascend to the Huyliche mountain range. The route follows the slopes of the Calafate Stream Canyon, where we'll see guanacos, foxes, hares, long-tailed meadowlarks, ibis, caracaras, and falcons, and perhaps even condors. We'll be surrounded by erratic boulders and formations, the product of glacial erosion, until we reach the First Balcony, dating back to the Cenozoic Era and 65 million years ago. Fossils, sediment, and fragments of fossilized vegetation will be part of the landscape.
After getting out of the vehicles for a few minutes at the viewpoints, we'll continue to 1100 meters above sea level, towards the upper balconies with views of the Andes Mountains, the Patagonian Ice Field, and the arms of Lake Argentino.
On clear days, the views can extend from Mount Stokes to Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre. If the valley is cloudy, we'll be able to see the Andes Mountains above the clouds, which are usually around 700 meters—about 400 meters below our position—an unforgettable view. Witnessing the majestic flight of the Andean Condor, the largest bird in continental Patagonia, will perhaps be part of the experience.
We'll begin our descent in a 4x4 vehicle down the southern slope of the mountain, meaning we'll return via a different route. We'll stop for a hike to the Labyrinth of Stones. *This stop is not made during periods of snowmelt or heavy rain.*
Continuing our descent, we'll arrive at Estancia Huyliche, a historic and still-operating cattle ranch dating back to the 1920s, the era of the historical events known as the Patagonia Rebellion. Lunch, afternoon tea, or dinner will be served in the oldest house on the ranch, depending on your reservation.
**The Cerro Huyliche 4x4 excursion offers three options for the descent:
4x4, Zip Line, or Trekking.
If you are traveling with family or friends and choose different options, you will share the 4x4 ascent to the mountain and the time spent at the Estancia Huyliche ranch.**
The tour lasts between 3.5 and 4 hours.
During winter, when part of the 4x4 route becomes inaccessible due to heavy snow accumulation (or mud during the thaw), the ascent is made to approximately 800 meters to reach the "East" Balcony, from which you can appreciate the magnificent panoramic views of El Calafate, Lake Argentino, and the Andes Mountains.
