Description
Early in the morning, the search begins at hotels in El Calafate before heading towards the legendary Route 40. This route skirts Lake Argentino, crosses the Santa Cruz and La Leona Rivers, and after 1 hour and 15 minutes, arrives at the Hotel de Campo La Leona, almost a museum of Route 40, where you can enjoy coffee and homemade cakes.
The journey continues along the shores of Lake Viedma with the Andes Mountains as a backdrop. Before reaching El Chaltén, a stop will be made at the Viedma Glacier viewpoint, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake and glacier of the same name, as well as the iconic Mount Fitz Roy and Mount Torre. After 3 hours on the road, you will arrive at the mountain village of El Chaltén.
Once in town, the guide will provide each passenger with their packed lunch (for those who have chosen this option) and then direct them to the start of the self-guided trails that depart from El Chaltén and lead to the main viewpoints: Laguna Capri, Fitz Roy Viewpoint, Cerro Torre Viewpoint, Condor Viewpoint, Chorrillo Waterfall, and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado (Laguna and Cerro Torre viewpoint). Passengers will be advised on the different options based on their physical condition.
Towards the end of the afternoon, at the agreed-upon time, passengers must return to the meeting point for the return trip to El Calafate.
Some of the aforementioned trails, such as Cerro Torre Viewpoint and Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, are very difficult to hike between May and September due to soil conditions, weather, and limited daylight hours. During the winter months, snow gear and footwear are required for hiking the trails, even for the Laguna Capri trail. National Park authorities may require trekking poles and crampons.
During the winter season, our stay in El Chaltén is approximately 5 hours.
Stops at La Leona and the Viedma Glacier viewpoint may be on the return journey, at the guide's discretion.
