Description
This is a moderately to highly demanding physical activity, geared towards travelers who want to explore trails that cross native forests and mountain rivers, with unique views of the glaciers and peaks of El Chaltén.
Itinerary
The excursion begins at 6:00 a.m., when the company's minibus picks you up from your accommodation in El Calafate. Once all passengers are on board, the vehicle heads towards El Chaltén, arriving in about three hours, traveling along a good portion of National Route 40. Halfway along this beautiful scenic route that traverses the vastness of the Patagonian steppe, you will already be able to appreciate the southern Andes, where the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Fitz Roy stands out against the other granite spires that surround it.
Once in El Chaltén, at approximately 8:30 a.m., there is a short stop for those who wish to use the restroom before beginning the hike. A second trekking guide joins the group here and will accompany them throughout the trek.
The trailhead is located at the Río Eléctrico Bridge, just 14 kilometers from El Chaltén. There, packed lunches are distributed to each hiker, and the group begins the hike at approximately 9:30 a.m.
In the first section of the route (6.3 km, which takes about an hour and a half to complete), the trail gains altitude until reaching the Piedras Blancas Lookout.
After the Piedras Blancas Glacier Lookout, the trail descends gradually to the Meeting Point near the Poincenot Base Camp, where the group arrives at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Those who hesitate to continue with the second leg, much more demanding than the first, will continue the trek with one of the two guides as GROUP 2 to the stunning Laguna Capri, another of El Chaltén's must-see attractions. Lunch will be served there before continuing the descent back to El Chaltén.
GROUP 1 continues the trek with one of the guides, passing through the Poincenot Base Camp area, crossing the bridge over the Blanco River, and from there beginning to gain altitude rapidly. In total, they ascend approximately 430 meters over nearly 3 kilometers to reach the summit: Laguna de los Tres.
As they ascend, increasingly panoramic views unfold, and they begin to feel closer to the mountains, which, due to their imposing presence, seem very near.
After the effort, at approximately 1:30 PM, the group reaches a moraine ridge from where the Fitz Roy massif can be appreciated in all its splendor, with Laguna de los Tres and its glacier at its base.
To reach the lagoon itself, a short descent is made, and once there, weather permitting, it will surely be the perfect moment for lunch, enjoying an unforgettable view and moment.
After exploring the area and taking many photos, GROUP 1 bids farewell to this magical place and begins the descent to El Chaltén.
Once the group reaches the Meeting Point in the Poincenot Camp area (where GROUP 2 eventually split up), the return route passes by Laguna Capri.
At approximately 7:00 PM, the minibus departs for the city of El Calafate, where the service concludes, dropping passengers off at their respective hotels between 9:00 and 10:00 PM.
